This pioneering study identifies the leading merchants of Georgian Guernsey. Cox reveals three important groups operating in St Peter Port: indigenous aristocrats, Huguenot refugees, and economic migrants from the Continent, England and Scotland. He finds that by the end of the eighteenth century St Peter Port had about the same number of negociants as Lorient. In terms of wealth the Guernsey merchants compared with those of Dunkirk. Not all of the merchants were supplying smugglers, several leading merchants operated in the international wine business.
Cox has placed the merchants in their context and discusses trade, cargoes, shipping, networks and the geography of their Atlantic world. A few Guernsey merchants participated in the slave trade. The merchants were also involved in the development of the economy of Catalonia.xx + 235pp + 20 plates . Soft cover.
